While the age old “go to your room,” is sometimes a necessary response to the current situation, the more you can make the consequence realistic to the behavior, the better.
Example: If a kid damages something, make them fix it as much as they are able. This may mean helping them glue something back together or having them spend their own money on parts. As much as age appropriate, having them fix the broken item teaches them a real life lesson about what happens when we break things. This is often better than just losing something or being grounded.
